Tasting Notes – Wines of Italy – 10.01.2025

presented by Joshua Terrell of Sunrise Imports

rugiada del mattino ~ 2021 (“morning dew”)

Our top characteristic? A holistic approach. A holistic winemaker sees the vineyard as a small part of a bigger ecosystem where every element lives in symbiosis and harmony with each other. I chose Pozzol Groppo, a small village in the Tortonese hills, because it is situated in a rare context with no contamination. Tasting this wine, you can sense the savory minerality of dewdrops in the fresh morning air, of unopened flower buds, pebbles, rocks, and sea air, with a touch of medicinal herbs and Mediterranean scrub. This is the wine I enjoy drinking when I feel the need for freshness, lightheartedness, smiles, and companionship.

VIGNE BASSE

Located in the municipality of Fosdinovo and Castelnuovo at an altitude of about 70 meters above sea level. The total planted area is 12 hectares with sandy-loamy soils rich in gravel. The Terenzuola estate was founded in the Municipality of Fosdinovo, in the heart of the Colli di Luni, in an impressive location 350 meters above sea level and five minutes from the coast. It all began in the early 1930s when my grandfather, Luigi Giuliani, returned from New York after the 1929 Great Depression and bought this three-hectare property, in a hilly area that he thought was ideal to grow vines, olive trees, vegetables and to produce honey. In the beginning, the farm was used to feed the family and part of the produce was sold directly to a small local market. The next generation maintained the same concept as their business goal.
Appellation: IGT Toscano, Italy
Grapes: 95% Vermentino, 5% Albarola, ABV 13%
Tasting notes: Intense yet elegant, offering floral, peach, lemon and wild herb aromas and flavors. Supple and harmonious, leaving a mouthwatering, salty impression on the tangy finish.

Ligurian whites and Tuscan reds, this is how Terenzuola could be summed up. The production area starts in the Cinque Terre, extends through Luni and ends on the slopes of the Apuan Alps, close to the remarkable marble quarries of Carrara. This area, called Lunigiana, has over 5000 years of history and it has been cultivated with vines since Roman times.

Rosso di Montalcino DOC ~ 2021 [certified organic]

Sanlorenzo is situated on the South-West slope of the municipality of Montalcino at an altitude of 500 metres on the ridge of the hills which stretch softly from Civitella to the Ombrone river. Rosso di Montalcino produced by our winery SanLorenzo comes from the farm’s youngest vineyards, which open up like an amphitheatre on the Valle dell’Orcia and towards the sea. The medium clay soil is rich in stones, and the particular microclimate of the more than 500 metres altitude makes the taste of the Sangiovese cultivated in these vineyards particularly delicate. Read below for all the characteristics of our Rosso di Montalcino wine.
Appellation: Montalcino–Tuscany, Italy

Tasting notes: The fresh aromas of ripe cherry and the pleasant hints of wood in the background make it balanced and elegant on the palate, giving it a particular taste that sets it apart.
